Seetag/Day at Sea 2.3 auf der/on CELEBRITY EQUINOX

Scroll down for English version.

Prolog: this part refer to some postings in a German forum which disagreed that I refer to another review who accepted the standards of the first night's waiters and liked to have them everyday. Sorry if you miss some connections to the answer.

With great interest I am following the reactions to this blog and under this circumstances I am glad to be arrogant, big-headed etc. etc.

But you are not on board and on the contrary I read many reviews and remembered a lot.

I am onboard of a ship which is only rated worse because it had no QUEEN GRILL-Class and should be better than any other large ship which I know as paying passenger and occured a request of a diferent standard.

That I refer to a review which was just recently released is an accident.

It was an accident that the names of the waiters were mentioned and it was so easy to remember them that in this moment when I read the name tags I was able to refer to another review.

Therefore it has nothing to do with an attack to a member of a specific forum. The review might also published on holidaycheck, tripadvisor or elsewhere.

I take the right to release my impressions.

The comparison exists only because one of the two waiters has a non uncharming way to ignore some shortcomings to feel comfortable with him. But after the 3rd dinner we know: you can have it totally different.

1. I like it if someone appears after a certain time when I had a chance to try the course and asks if everything is all right. This will allow me to order a substitute for meals which do not meet my expectations and they are served before others have their dessert.

2. I like waiters having an eye-contact with you and you can address them very discretely without shouting loud "Waiter", or to block his way or to damage a glass before I get his attention and before he clears the table.

3. I like it if everyone at the table have their course which you can eat soon after serving and not that he serves the next tables and that salad dressings and sauces which are part of the course were served on request and the waiter let you know that you are unpatient.

4. I like it if bread-crumbs are taken away before the dessert is served.

5. I like it if bread-baskets are filled this way that you can take a piece of bread without having a bad concious and other have the feeling that you are not respectful.

6. I like it if butter and other spreads are not rancid or dried out.

7. I like it if the waiter has a plan if not everybody at the table takes the same number of courses.

8. I like it if the silverware will be cleared, replaced or added very discretely in appropiate breaks and not while we were eating.

9. I like it if maîtres show up at the table or come if you have requested him to come.

10. I like it if the waiters take the time to ask the ladies at the table for their orders and in a order of the honor if more than one lady at the table.

With this expectations I am going to a restaraut. And I was unable to experience all these items at the first night.

If by accident the waiters who were reviewed in the internet before as good I feel free to say that charme only is not enough for me.

We never asked for the same table or the same waiter so it was by accident that we had the same table and waiter the 2nd and 3rd night.

There we experienced as follows:

Our waiters looked from time to time from their service station to us to check if someone was looking for them.

The 2nd night my salad was served and the waiter said that we will return with the dressing and we should wait another moment. He returned to his stationa and he came again with the salad dressing.

The 3rd night his assistant was placed with the tray of sald dressing next to him. When he started to walk he saw that one fork was missing on my table. So he returned to his station, get me first a fork, before he returned again to the station to collect the salads and his assistant with the salad dressings.

The breadbasked was always filled the way that you can take out a piece of bread without giving the next the feeling that you took something away from him.

The Hummus was not dried out, the butter had a great shape and it was matt and not rancid. And the Pesto on the 3rd day did not make the appearance as it was the black olive spread from the 1st night like I thought.

Each of us finished the course before the main course and the table was cleared the same time: I know it this way and I got it the 2nd and 3rd night.

The silverware was replaced, completed or cleared when everybody was finished with the food.

In other reviews it might be that the maître appeared every night but with us he did not show up the 1st night and the 2nd night I asked for him and he did not show up. The 3rd night he was only with us but no where else. I think all of us deserve his attention and not just single guests or more extreme lke on MSC: if you are an Italian guest.

The 1st night the waiter walked around the table. The 2nd night the ladies were asked first for their orders and in the order I would expected it: - the the oldest Gentleman and last not least me as a certain host function because I was translating. The 3rd night he took a position which allow me not to shout when Katie and Charlie placed their orders.

That I need to translate was due to missing English headers like they use with Royal Caribbean.

On the ship announcements were only in two languages: English and German: so I think that the part of the German speaking guests are extremely high. All three nights I reqeusted on the way to the table that we need German menus and none were ready. They need to be prepare once they are requested. But even then you get only the daily menu in German. The all-time-menu and the dessert-menu were never available in German.

NCL is not non-plus-ultra for me - but it's the company I can afford while I cannot go with others. But for me restaurant service is one of my major criteria to book or not - and if others go on their cruises with other standards and see it more relaxed: they are welcome - but here I am presenting my expected standards and they fulfill them or not. And I am always looking for Freestyle-alternatives because if NCL cut so much: just a nice service-team is not enough for me. Currently the best price-value-ratio you can get is with NCL. If I get more service than for a fictive price: the better for me.

It could be worse than described:

next to us three guests occupied a table of four. The waiter disliked to walk aorund and so the waiter stand at the empty seat and handed over the plate over the vacant seat. Then he remarked that they had no silverware...

To feel 100% comfortable and to decide that Celebrity will join closer circle of our preferred companies there is one procedure they need to abolish:

In the morning with the breakfast in the Main Dining Room: Why do you need to fill up one area so all waiters there were totally busy because life is going on here only and other waiters in other areas wait for the opening of their areas and their service. That is nice with NCL. The guests are allocated to the different open stations so there is never a crowded atmosphere.

Maybe one day Celebrity can tell me: is that only my expected standard or this is the standard Celebrity expects from themselves???

I can fully imagine that I would have become a well-experienced and fanatic like others I know in the German forums.

I only had the unluck that nothing worked on CENTURY and indeed there is no comparison to CELEBRITY EQUINOX now.

I had luck that RCI Frankfurt reacted the appropiate way and gave me an incentive to try it again.

Costa did not react as expected and now they have the unluck that we cancel when we find something more suitable.

Royal Caribbean in Miami reacted so disappointing. Before I pay 200 GBP for cancellation fee for nothing: somebody may go for the open balance and use my deposit. That's worth to go again on NCL. And someone who always is nice to me may go now for 165 GBP on a 3-nighter on INDEPENDENCE OF THE SEAS.

By the way: sorry that RCI Frankfurt reacted so bad when tried to book CELEBRITY ECLIPSE: When I called early in the morning the bookings were not open. When I called later the day as requested I was told that UK and Spain have blocked all staterooms for holding and all affordable categories were gone. So Celebrity would have been another time in 2010 on my list.

So further criterias for decisions are how they treated us before and after the cruise and my beloved short cruises. If they convince me in few nights that they have a great product for a long journey then Cruise and Hotel Director made a great job. If you make the experience like we made on CENTURY or COSTA CLASSICA and you do not give incentives to return than you should not wonder if you do not return and book longer cruises.
